Rack collapse is one of the most preventable warehouse incidents — and one of the most costly when it isn't prevented. Damage tends to accumulate quietly, one forklift graze at a time, until a bay is carrying far less margin than its rated load suggests.
1. Visible bends in upright columns
Even a bend of 5 mm over a 1 metre span can reduce a column's load capacity significantly. Sight down each upright from the base — anything that isn't straight needs a closer look.
2. Missing or loose safety clips
Safety clips keep beams locked into the upright connector under vibration and impact. A missing clip is one of the fastest fixes on an inspection report — and one of the most common.
3. Cracked or deformed baseplates
Baseplates transfer the entire column load to the floor. Cracking, or a baseplate lifting away from the slab, usually points to an impact or overload event upstream.
If you spot damage: take the affected bay out of service and flag it clearly until a qualified inspector has assessed it.
